Stuck on Umbrel Local Welcome Screen

I’m setting up my Umbrel via Rasberry Pi for the first time and haven’t logged into the node yet. I’ve bought the same exact hardware recommended on the Umbrel homepage; ordered directly from the suggested Amazon links. I’ve got through the steps of flashing the OS on the microSD, connecting the SSD and the Raspberry pi, connecting the Raspberry Pi to the router via ethernet, and then turning on the power. When I navigate to the umbrel.local site to log into my node for the first time and complete my setup, the page gets stuck on the welcome screen and the button never stops ‘loading’. I am never given the option to get started.

When I open up the Chrome developer console, here’s the error I see:
TypeError: Cannot read property ‘length’ of undefined vue.runtime.esm.js:1888
at t.value (ScrambledText.vue:20)
at o.updateText (ScrambledText.vue:81)

at o.patch (vue.runtime.esm.js:6565)
at o.Yn.t._update (vue.runtime.esm.js:3948)
at o.r (vue.runtime.esm.js:4066).

Not sure how to resolve and complete the initial setup of my node, thanks for any assistance and advice. I’ve already reformatted and reflashed the microSD card a couple times and continue to get stuck in this same spot.

Hi Aaron, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it’s working the same way in Microsoft Edge too - stuck on that loading screen with the same error messages in the dev console. Is there another browser that I should try besides Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge?

Hi @aarondewes, still haven’t been able to get past this loading screen, any suggestions?

I have opened an SSH terminal using the instructions here: https://umbrelinfo.gitlab.io/troubleshooting.html#can-i-login-using-ssh

I ran the following script to attempt to diagnose the problem: ~/umbrel/scripts/debug --upload

But the script found no issues - here was the result.

When you reflash the micro sd card, is there two flashed files on there, do you have to delete what is on the already once flashed micro sd card before you reflash it?

I am having a very similar issue (first time initializing Umbrel node) but I get past that first loading page, I am able to type in a name and hit enter, but then when I hit enter after typing in a password I want to use the screen sticks in the exact way detailed in the original post above.

I am using the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with 8GB RAM. I am using all the hardware components suggested by Umbrel.

Ultimately, I was able to successfully get the node booted up and synced by re-flashing the SD card. Strangely, it took a couple reflashes before the issue was fixed and the post-flash validation step even gave me an error message. But somehow now my node is up and running, I’ll take it! Thanks for the help and suggestions here @aarondewes.

I am having the same problem. Difference is that i was able to create username and password and saved the seed.
after that, i got stuck in the loading screen.

I have reformatted the SD several times and got the same result.

==== Result ====

The temperature of your Raspberry Pi is too high. We recommend either using a case that lowers the temperature of your Pi or a case with a builtin fan.

That might be why, check your case and be sure that it has an active cooling system such as heatsink/fan. Umbrel uses a lot of CPU resources to verify the blocks, so this might be why the system is throttling itself to prevent damage to the Raspberry Pi board.

thanks, I will try that out

Can someone help me out , also stuck in welcome screen

hi, I’m having the same problem. Both in a raspberry 4 and a 400… I’ve connected a screen and I should be able to type something with the raspberry pi 400, but it seems I can’t type anything so that I can run a debug command… what can I do? should I reflash the microsd with the newest version of Umbrel? I’m using an umbrel install from 45 days ago… thanks

i flashed again the latest version, .14 . Now at least when i run umbrel.local it shows a log with issues: Starting Umbrel…

Restarting…

Please do not disconnect the power supply while the restart is in progress.

Shutting down…

Please do not disconnect the power supply until the shutdown is complete.

Shutdown complete

Error: External drive disconnected

The external drive was disconnected while Umbrel was running. This can sometimes happen when using an unofficial Raspberry Pi power supply.

Error: Version mismatch

The version of UmbrelOS on your microSD card is not compatible with the version of Umbrel on your external drive.

Error: No external drive found

Please connect an external drive (at least 1TB) to a USB 3.0 port (blue color) on your Raspberry Pi and restart your Umbrel.

Error: Multiple external drives found

Umbrel only works with one external drive of atleast 1TB size. Please disconnect any additional external drives and restart your Umbrel.

Error: Failed to connect external drive

There was an error connecting your external drive. Please consider using the recommended hardware listed on getumbrel.com.

the ssd disk is the recommended on getumbrel… Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD, up to 560MB/s -

I’m running into the same issue. Did you ever solve your problem?

Update: My issues was solved by reformatting my SSD.
